- Endoscopy
Endoscopy involves the use of a tube-like instrument to see inside the body in a non-invasive manner. There are many ways this technology can be used to help diagnose elusive diseases.
The endoscope can be used to see inside body cavities such as the abdomen and chest without the surgeon having to make the usual large incision. Making the smaller incisions required for endoscopic exam allows the patient to recover more quickly and with less pain. Unlike the diagnostic tools of ultrasound or X-ray, with endoscopy biopsy samples can be taken at the time of the procedure if needed.
The endoscope can also be inserted into the stomach, intestines, colon, nose or wind pipe to permit the doctor to actually see inside these organs. This can help diagnose tumors, inflammation and foreign material. If a tumor is encountered it can be biopsied and possibly removed. Foreign material can also often times be removed from the stomach without an abdominal incision.
