Diet Rotation
Think of your favorite food. Think how much you love the taste of that food. Is your mouth watering? Have ever eaten nothing but your favorite food for a whole day? How about nothing but your favorite food for a whole week? Well if you love it so much, why don’t you eat that food every meal, every day?
We all get sick of eating the same food over and over again, even if it is our favorite food. The reason is that our bodies have a built-in system that keeps us from eating a restricted diet. Our bodies know that to stay healthy it needs a variety of foods each with its unique nutrients.
The same principle is true of our pets. (This explains why some dogs eat garbage and poop, anything but the same old thing day in and day out.) Our pets need a variety of foods because each food has a different nutrient profile. It is simply not healthy to feed a pet the same diet continuously for months or years on end.
I know what you’re thinking, you’ve always been told not to change your pet’s diet because it will cause GI problems. In fact, that stance is a self-fulfilling prophecy. I can assure you that if you ate nothing but Total cereal, every meal for a month and then someone gave you a steak dinner, you would have GI problems too. However, because our intestines are used to a variety of foods coming through, they can handle it just fine.
Things work the same way with our pets. When pets are fed a variety of foods, their systems can handle the change. In fact, most pets thrive when their foods are changed from time to time – every few days to weekly.
